Nancy Guthrie’s home

18 de agosto de 2026

Tucson, Arizona. — Human r3m41ns discovered in a desert area approximately 15 miles from the home of missing 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie prompted a new law-enforcement response in Pima County, but authorities are stressing that the discovery is not currently believed to be connected to her disappearance.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Search and Rescue deputies responded to a desert area near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, southwest of Tucson, after the r3m41ns were reported.

The discovery immediately attracted attention because of its relative proximity to the Catalina Foothills home from which Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared more than six months ago.

However, investigators quickly cautioned against connecting the two cases.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, there was “no indication” at the time of the announcement that the r3m41ns were associated with the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Officials also said the r3m41ns appeared to have been at the desert location for an extended period of time.

That detail is particularly important because it suggests investigators had preliminary reasons to believe the discovery did not match the known timeline surrounding Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Authorities have not publicly identified the individual whose r3m41ns were recovered. Details about the person’s age, sex, cause of d34th and how long the r3m41ns had been in the desert were not immediately released in the initial reports.

The circumstances surrounding exactly who discovered the r3m41ns and when they were first located also were not immediately made public. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department declined to provide additional information about some of those details while deputies continued handling the scene.

The discovery comes as the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active.

Nancy, who is Savannah Guthrie’s mother, was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence on the evening of January 31, 2026. She was reported missing on February 1 after failing to appear for a scheduled virtual church service. Investigators subsequently concluded that she had not simply left the residence voluntarily.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has previously said investigators believe Nancy was taken from her home against her will. The residence was treated as a cr1m3 scene, and the investigation developed into a suspected 4bduct10n case.

Investigators have spent more than six months following leads, conducting searches and analyzing physical and digital evidence, but Nancy Guthrie has not been located and no one has been publicly charged with her disappearance.

One of the most significant pieces of evidence released publicly has been surveillance imagery showing a masked individual outside Nancy’s residence around the time she disappeared. Authorities have sought assistance from the public in identifying that person.

Investigators have also examined ransom notes connected to the case. More recently, authorities released the full text of two such communications in hopes that someone might recognize distinctive wording or other characteristics that could help identify their author.

At least one of those communications reportedly contained a claim about Nancy’s fate. Law enforcement has not treated such an assertion as independently verified proof of what happened to her, and Nancy remains the subject of an active investigation.

Investigators have additionally examined forensic evidence collected from Nancy’s residence. Hair recovered during the investigation has been analyzed, but publicly reported testing had not produced a match capable of identifying a suspect.

The latest discovery in the desert therefore generated immediate speculation online, particularly because it occurred only about 15 miles from Nancy’s home.

Authorities, however, have urged the public not to make that connection.

As of August 18, 2026, the most important distinction is clear: human r3m41ns have been discovered in Pima County, but investigators currently say there is no indication that they belong to Nancy Guthrie or are otherwise connected to her disappearance.

The identity of the person found in the desert will require a separate investigative and forensic process. Until authorities complete that work, claims identifying the r3m41ns as Nancy Guthrie would be unsupported.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie and her family continue waiting for answers about what happened to Nancy. The family has repeatedly appealed for information while investigators pursue leads generated during the months-long search.

For Sheriff Chris Nanos and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, the two matters currently remain separate investigations: one involves determining the identity and circumstances surrounding the r3m41ns discovered near West Ajo Way and South La Cholla Boulevard, while the other remains focused on locating Nancy Guthrie and identifying whoever was responsible for her disappearance.

Unless new forensic evidence establishes a connection, authorities are asking that the discovery not be presented as a breakthrough in Nancy’s case.

For now, the central facts remain unchanged: Nancy Guthrie is still missing, the investigation into her disappearance remains active, and the newly discovered human r3m41ns have not been linked to her.
