Kern County, California. — What was supposed to be a joyful family trip celebrating a teenager’s upcoming birthday ended in tr4g3dy early Sunday when a mother and her two daughters were k1ll3d in a three-vehicle head-on cr4sh on Highway 99 near Bakersfield.
The three women have been identified by relatives through a verified GoFundMe as Vanessa and her daughters Kloie and Kylie. As of the latest reports, authorities have not publicly released their surnames, so responsible reporting cannot provide full legal names that have not yet been confirmed.
The family had traveled to Fresno to attend a concert as part of a celebration for Kloie’s upcoming 17th birthday on August 20. After spending the evening together, Vanessa and her daughters began their trip back home, unaware that the journey would end only hours later.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the cr4sh occurred at approximately 12:44 a.m. Sunday, August 16, on southbound Highway 99, just north of 7th Standard Road in Kern County, near Bakersfield. Three vehicles ultimately became involved.
Investigators determined that one of the vehicles was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes immediately before the collision. However, an important part of the investigation remains unresolved: CHP has not yet publicly determined which of the three vehicles was traveling in the wrong direction.
Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie were traveling together inside a 2022 Honda Accord. Following the impact, the Honda became engulfed in fl4m3s, and all three family members d13d at the scene before they could be saved.
The other vehicles involved were a 2019 BMW 530i and a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado. CHP reported that the BMW was being driven by a 44-year-old man, while the Chevrolet was driven by a 41-year-old woman.
The BMW driver and another occupant suffered s3v3r3 1njur13s and were transported for medical treatment. Two people traveling in the Chevrolet Colorado sustained comparatively m1n0r 1njur13s following the collision.
For relatives, however, the most painful element of the story is what the family had been doing immediately before the tr4g3dy. Vanessa had taken her daughters to Fresno specifically to create another happy memory as Kloie prepared to turn 17.
The concert was held at the Save Mart Center in Fresno and featured Thee Sacred Souls, La Lom and The Womack Sisters, according to reporting about the family’s fundraiser. After the performance, Vanessa and her daughters headed home through California’s Central Valley.
Instead of preparing for Kloie’s birthday celebration, relatives are now confronting the simultaneous l0ss of three members of the same immediate family. The fundraiser established by people close to them described what happened as an almost unimaginable change from celebration to mourning.
The family’s grief has another particularly difficult dimension. Vanessa leaves behind a son, while Kloie and Kylie leave behind their brother. He is expected to turn 16 on August 20, the same date on which Kloie would have celebrated her 17th birthday.
Money collected through the family fundraiser is intended to help cover memorial and fun3r4l expenses, immediate family needs and support for the surviving teenager as relatives attempt to navigate the aftermath of the sudden triple l0ss.
Authorities, meanwhile, continue reconstructing exactly what happened on Highway 99. Because investigators have not determined which vehicle entered the freeway in the wrong direction, there is currently no verified basis for publicly assigning responsibility for the cr4sh to any of the drivers involved.
CHP has also said investigators do not yet know whether alcohol or dr0gs played a role. That question remains part of the investigation, making claims circulating online about intoxication or a specific wrong-way driver premature unless authorities later confirm them.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office had also not publicly released the victims’ official identities at the time of the latest reporting. Their identification as Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie comes from relatives and loved ones connected with the verified family fundraiser.
That distinction is important because their surnames have not been reliably published by authorities or the major news organizations covering the case. Until those details become public, Vanessa, Kloie and Kylie are the most complete verified names currently available.
News of their d34ths has generated an outpouring of sympathy as the circumstances surrounding their final hours became known. The three had spent Saturday together celebrating an important milestone in Kloie’s life before beginning what should have been an ordinary drive home.
Instead, shortly before 12:45 Sunday morning, their Honda became part of a devastating wrong-way collision that claimed all three lives and left three additional people 1njur3d. Investigators are now asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact the California Highway Patrol.
For the family, August 20 will now carry an especially painful meaning. It was supposed to mark Kloie’s 17th birthday and her brother’s 16th birthday, following a weekend designed around music, celebration and memories shared with their mother and sister.
As of August 20, 2026, the investigation remains active. What has been established is that Vanessa and her daughters Kloie and Kylie were together returning from the Fresno concert when their lives ended on Highway 99 — turning a birthday celebration into an unimaginable family tr4g3dy.
