CAMBRIA HEIGHTS, Queens — A 13-year-old boy identified as Sanjay Samuel was shot in the head on the morning of Monday, September 22, 2025, outside a Dunkin’ Donuts in the Cambria Heights neighborhood, police and family sources say. He was walking toward school when the incident occurred.

Sanjay was rushed to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting, which took place around 8:21 a.m.

According to his mother, he had just spoken to her and left for school normally, calling out “Mom, bye. I love you. See you this afternoon.” She said she never received his call again.

Police say the suspect approached the scene on a scooter and opened fire. A single shot struck Sanjay in the head.

Investigators believe the shooting was deliberate and targeted, though they have not confirmed whether Sanjay was the intended victim.

On Wednesday afternoon, Sanjay’s family was informed by doctors that he was brain-dead and would not recover.

The family announced their intent to donate his organs. His mother described her world as “crumbled apart.”

Over the following days, police identified a 16-year-old suspect, later named as Jaysohn Sykes (alias “Flex”), believed responsible for the shooting.

He surrendered to authorities and faces charges of second-degree murder and criminal weapons possession, and if convicted could face up to 25 years to life in prison.

A vigil was held in Cambria Heights with family, friends and community members mourning Sanjay’s life and pledging to help end gun violence.

The family described him as joyful, loving basketball and school, and only beginning his high school journey when his life was cut short.

As the investigation continues, the NYPD requested anyone with information to come forward.

Sanjay’s death has reignited concerns about youth street violence in New York City and the vulnerability of children in everyday settings once considered safe.
