LOUISVILLE, FL — A quiet Saturday evening at a Burger King on Blanding Boulevard turned into a fatal scene of violence when 18-year-old employee Matthew Jackson was shot and killed during what authorities describe as a “senseless act of rage.”
The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m., after a customer became enraged over a routine drive-thru dispute. Witnesses report the altercation began as a verbal disagreement before escalating to deadly violence.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the suspect — identified as 28-year-old Dawud Burritt — exited his vehicle and entered the restaurant after arguing with staff.
Investigators say Burritt then pulled out a firearm and opened fire inside the establishment, striking Matthew and another individual.
Employees and customers scrambled for safety as chaos erupted in the dining area.
First responders arrived within minutes, but despite aggressive life-saving measures from paramedics, Matthew Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim sustained injuries but survived. Authorities detained Burritt early Sunday morning, and he now faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder.
Matthew’s mother, Natasha, shared her devastation publicly, writing, “I lost my son behind a burger — a damn burger.” She described him as a hardworking and kind teenager who never caused trouble and always tried to help others.
Friends and coworkers echoed her sentiments, remembering Matthew as a gentle, respectful young man whose presence made long shifts easier.
The community quickly rallied around the grieving family.
Flowers, candles, and handwritten notes have been placed outside the restaurant, honoring Matthew’s life and condemning the violence that ended it. One note read, “Thank you for being light, Matthew.
We will remember you.” Local residents expressed sorrow and outrage over yet another young life lost to preventable violence.
Police officials, speaking at a Sunday press briefing, emphasized that the confrontation should never have escalated beyond a verbal dispute.
“This was an absolutely senseless act,” one investigator said. “A young man is dead because someone could not control their anger.”
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses as the case moves toward prosecution.
As the Jackson family prepares for funeral arrangements, the broader community continues to grapple with grief and frustration.
Matthew, described by loved ones as warm-hearted and full of potential, had been building his life one shift at a time.
His death has become another painful reminder of how quickly moments of rage can destroy families and futures — and how urgently change is needed to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
