MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 3-year-old boy identified as Kevin Horton died after suffering severe injuries inside his home, leading to the arrest of his father’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Dominica Mosby, on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.
The case, which unfolded in 2019, remains one of the most disturbing child abuse incidents reported in Shelby County in recent years.
According to investigators, Kevin’s father briefly left the home and returned to find his son unresponsive on a bed.
Emergency crews responded to the residence, but Kevin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial statements from Mosby suggested the child had been vomiting and was put down to rest, but investigators quickly identified inconsistencies in her account.
As the investigation continued, Mosby admitted to intentionally harming the child.
Court documents state that she burned Kevin with a cigarette, used a lighter on his body, and struck him multiple times.
Detectives also reported that she stomped on the child’s abdomen with the heel of her boot and hit his torso and chest with both closed fists and open hands.
A medical examiner’s report confirmed extensive injuries, including a lacerated liver, significant internal bleeding, bruising across the torso, and burns to the ear and genital area.
Authorities described the injuries as consistent with repeated, forceful abuse.
The findings supported the conclusion that the trauma Kevin sustained was deliberate and occurred over a period of time.
Family members later told investigators that they had noticed unexplained bruises during previous visits, including a swollen lip, facial injuries and scratches.
Relatives said they had concerns but were unaware of the extent of the abuse the child was enduring inside the home.
Kevin, described by his family as playful and affectionate, had no known medical conditions that could have caused such injuries.
Mosby was arrested by Memphis Police and transported to the Shelby County Jail, where she was charged with one count of first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated abuse and neglect.
She awaited arraignment as detectives continued reviewing the timeline of events and collecting forensic evidence from the residence.
Kevin’s death deeply affected the community, prompting discussions about child welfare, reporting suspected abuse and the need for vigilance among caregivers and neighbors.
Authorities said the case underscores the importance of early intervention when signs of mistreatment appear, especially involving children who are too young to speak for themselves.
Loved ones held memorials for Kevin, remembering him as a joyful, curious toddler whose life was cut short before he reached preschool age.
Relatives said they are focused on preserving his memory and seeking justice through the court process.
They emphasized that Kevin was loved deeply by his family and deserved protection and safety.
The investigation into Kevin Horton’s death remains a sobering example of the consequences of unchecked abuse.
Police and prosecutors say they remain committed to securing accountability for the violent acts that ended the life of a child who relied entirely on the adults around him for care.
