MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 3-year-old boy identified as Kevin Horton died after suffering severe injuries inside his home, leading to the arrest of his father’s girlfriend, 29-year-old Dominica Mosby, on charges including first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.
The case, which unfolded in 2019, remains one of the most disturbing child abuse incidents reported in Shelby County in recent years.
According to investigators, Kevin’s father briefly left the home and returned to find his son unresponsive on a bed.
Emergency crews responded to the residence, but Kevin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial statements from Mosby suggested the child had been vomiting and was put down to rest, but investigators quickly identified inconsistencies in her account.
As the investigation continued, Mosby admitted to intentionally harming the child.
Court documents state that she burned Kevin with a cigarette, used a lighter on his body, and struck him multiple times.
Detectives also reported that she stomped on the child’s abdomen with the heel of her boot and hit his torso and chest with both closed fists and open hands.
A medical examiner’s report confirmed extensive injuries, including a lacerated liver, significant internal bleeding, bruising across the torso, and burns to the ear and genital area.
Authorities described the injuries as consistent with repeated, forceful abuse.
The findings supported the conclusion that the trauma Kevin sustained was deliberate and occurred over a period of time.
Family members later told investigators that they had noticed unexplained bruises during previous visits, including a swollen lip, facial injuries and scratches.
