FARGO, ND — A routine middle-school basketball game at Discovery Middle School turned into a heartbreaking emergency Friday afternoon when 13-year-old Jemimah Audu suddenly collapsed on the court.
The gym, moments earlier filled with cheers and excitement, fell into panic as coaches, students, and parents rushed toward the unconscious athlete.
School staff and first responders immediately began lifesaving measures as the crowd watched in shock.
Jemimah was transported to Stanford Medical Center, where doctors worked urgently to revive her.
Despite all efforts, she died shortly after arrival, with officials describing the incident as a sudden and unexpected medical event.
Jemimah’s parents, Johnny and Sara Cox, were left devastated by the news. They remembered their daughter as a bright, joyful girl who loved basketball, her youth group at Northview Church, and spending time with her younger brother, Jethro.
Her family says she was known for her radiant smile and the kindness she showed to everyone she met.
The school community has been deeply shaken by her passing. Friends flooded social media with tributes, calling Jemimah a “beautiful soul” and a student whose presence “lit up every room.”
Many shared memories of her friendly greetings in the hallways and her unwavering positivity both on and off the court.
A GoFundMe created to support the family’s unexpected funeral expenses quickly gained traction, raising several thousand dollars within days.
Flowers, notes, and condolences have also been posted on West Funeral Home’s tribute page, reflecting the widespread grief felt across Fargo’s schools and neighborhoods.
While the exact cause of Jemimah’s collapse remains undetermined, medical experts note that sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death among young athletes.
Although rare, affecting an estimated 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 100,000 youth each year, such events are often catastrophic and leave communities searching for answers.
Jemimah’s funeral is scheduled for December 1 at Northview Church, where family, friends, classmates, and teachers will gather to mourn her loss and honor her life.
Her memory, her laughter, and her kindness continue to echo through the halls she once walked—an enduring reminder of a bright young spirit gone far too soon.
