Weighing in at just 3.2 ounces, the DS2 2024 is deceptively light. However, its CNC machined solid metal construction suggests durability, backed by a two-year warranty—an impressive commitment compared to the typical one-year coverage seen with most competitors.

On the exterior, it features a sample rate LED indicator on one side, while the bottom houses both the 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs, alongside a USB-C port on the top. Notably, independent 60-step volume controls are situated on the left side, providing satisfying tactile feedback with every adjustment.

Internally, dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips empower its outputs, delivering audio with notable fidelity.

Features

The DS2 2024 shines in its simplicity and functionality, supporting DSD256 and PCM 32-BIT/385kHz decoding. It offers 510mW output at 32 ohms from the 4.4mm jack but only 130mW at 32 ohms from the 3.5mm connection, which could be a limitation for power-hungry headphones.

A standout track, Charles Mingus’ “Moanin’,” revealed the DS2’s attention to audio detail and musical nuance. It showcases how the DAC handles the interplay of instruments with impressive accuracy, allowing the user to appreciate complex layering of sounds.

While the bass and mids won’t shake the foundations, they manage to deliver a satisfying listening experience. The upright bass in “Moanin’” underlines its clarity without overshadowing higher frequencies, capturing tracks like Skrillex’s “Mumbai Power” with vibrancy.

Listening to Paul Simon's “Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes,” the soundstage felt closed-off. The vocals were bright, toeing the line of sibilance, especially under critical conditions. It’s worth mentioning that overly bright horns, such as those in Art Blakey's “Moanin’,” maintain their sharpness with the DS2 as well.

Despite its minor quirks, the overall listening experience remains impressive, augmented by its balanced 4.4mm output for more demanding IEMs and headphones.

Competition

At a price point of $60, the competition appears sparse. The HiBy FC4, Fiio KA13, and Fiio Ka3 are alternatives with similar capabilities but at a slightly higher cost, around $80, without significantly better sound quality.

The iFi GO link matches the price but offers fewer features, lacking a 4.4mm balanced output and on-device volume controls, making the DS2 a more favorable choice.
