WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 3-year-old girl has died after being struck by a stray bullet while watching Fourth of July fireworks with her family in Southeast Washington, police confirmed.

The victim, identified as Honesty Cheadle of Southeast D.C., was sitting in a parked vehicle with relatives on 14th Street SE in the early morning hours of July 5 when gunfire erupted nearby.

A single round pierced the vehicle and struck the child as she watched the fireworks from inside the car.

Family members rushed Honesty to a local hospital, where she underwent emergency treatment and was placed on life support. Despite doctors’ efforts, she succumbed to her injuries two days later.

Police officially ruled her death a homicide and opened a full investigation into the shooting.

Relatives describe Honesty as a happy, energetic child who loved doing flips and carrying her favorite book everywhere she went. “It’s very heartbreaking.

It’s like the light is gone,” her aunt, Tamika Butler, said, noting that the 3-year-old was the baby of both sides of the family and had been the “joy” of every gathering.

According to investigators, the shot that killed Honesty was not intended for anyone inside the vehicle.

Detectives believe the round came from gunfire in the area as people gathered outside in the aftermath of Fourth of July celebrations.

No arrests have been made, and police have not publicly identified a suspect.

The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that even small details about what people saw or heard around the time of the shooting could be critical.

Authorities have announced a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case, underscoring their frustration that a young child was killed by reckless gunfire on a holiday meant for celebration.

Community members have expressed outrage and grief over Honesty’s death, calling it another painful example of innocent children being caught in the crossfire of gun violence.

Neighbors have left balloons, stuffed animals and candles near the scene, while local leaders have renewed calls for cooperation with investigators and for an end to celebratory and indiscriminate shooting in residential areas.

City officials and anti-violence advocates say Honesty’s killing highlights the ongoing toll of stray bullets and illegal gunfire in the District.

They are urging residents to report individuals who fire weapons in public spaces and to support efforts aimed at preventing similar tragedies during holidays and major events.

Honesty’s family is now preparing for her funeral while continuing to plead for justice. They are asking anyone who knows who fired the shot that killed her to do the right thing.

“She was three years old,” one relative said. “She should have been safe with her family, watching fireworks — not losing her life to a bullet that never should have been fired.”
